Maltsters us a small amount of peat to produce ‘peated malt’ which is subsequently used to impart a distinctive smoky character to whisky. The peat used is extracted from specific locations in Scotland and is sourced and utilised as efficiently as possible in order to preserve the natural peatlands. The MAGB is committed to responsible peat use and to peatland restoration alongside programmes such as the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) Commitment to Responsible Peat Use-CRPU.
