The Macpherson Memorial Trust has recently recieved a very generous donation, from the the estate of a former Trustee and long time supporter of the malting Industry, Peter Ellis.
A graduate of Newcastle upon Tyne University with a BSc (Hons) in Agriculture, Peter joined Associated British Maltsters (ABM) in the early 1980’s and was involved in numerous aspects of the company’s malt production business and latterly responsibility for the company’s global export trade.
Following the tragic death of Tim Macpherson in 1986 and the subsequent sale of ABM to Pauls Malt in 1987, Peter took up a role with Scottish and Newcastle Breweries (S&N) malt production subsiduary Moray Firth Malting (MFM) where again he was involved in numerous aspects of their business and was subsequently appointed Managing Director of the MFM malting Group in 1992. He also chaired their rural and supply subsiduries.
In 1999 following the merger of MFM with multi national ConAgra and its UK malt business Bairds Malt, Peter continued to work for S&N to expand their brewing interests further afield.
In 2003 Peter moved to India as Deputy CEO in a joint venture between S&N and India’s market leader United Breweries.
In 2005 Peter left S&N and emigrated to New Zealand with an aspiration of becoming involved in their Agribusiness sector. He was appointed CEO of Farmlands, a rural supply Cooperative in 2006, where he stayed until 2013.
He then set up his own business, EASE Consulting Ltd and had a number of senior roles in companies involved in manufacturing, distibution, health, property inspections and agribusiness.
Sadly Peter passed away on 23rd September 2023 but his generous donation will be put to good use by the Trust and our thoughts, thanks, and condolences go to his family in New Zealand.
