Whilst individual companies compete strongly for business in the market place, there has been a history since 1827 of cooperation in non-competitive areas. One example of this has been the development of standards of excellence in malting proficiency.
In 1981 the MAGB held the first Malting Diploma examination for the malting industry, open to senior technical maltsters with a minimum of 3 years malting experience. This was the first such award in the malting world, and has attracted candidates from outside the UK for several years.
In 2010 two levels of examination were introduced - the Malting Diploma and the Master Maltster.
Malting Diploma - Open to both home and overseas candidates. No formal qualifications will be required for entry to the exam. The Syllabus is wide ranging and designed to cover all aspects of malting. Experience prior to entry is necessary to acquire a basic theoretical and practical knowledge of all aspects of malting.
Master Maltster. This prestigious qualification is for experienced maltsters with extensive practical and technical experience in all areas of malting (minimum of 2 years). It involves the execution of an industrial project and the submission of a detailed project report, plus an oral examination and case study.
Since 1993 the MAGB has held an examination for those involved in operating malting plants, called the Certificate of Malting Competence (CMC). Until 2001, because of strong demand, this was restricted to UK candidates. However Canadian maltsters took part in the exam in 2003, and Russian maltsters took part in the 2005 and 2007 exams.
In 2011 the Certificate of Malting Competence went through a full review which resutled in it being split into two separate exams:– the General Certificate of Malting; and Fundamentals in Malting. Both stages can be taken separately but, in order to achieve the full Certificate of Malting Competence qualification candidates will need to achieve a PASS in both stages.
