Malting Barley Grower Competition – Update

The two panels of judges are now considering all applications and drawing up a shortlist. Growers on the shortlist will be contacted during July to arrange a suitable date for the judges to visit their farms.

2010 Grower of the Year Competition
Highlighting the very best in growing, storing and marketing malting barley is the aim of this new competition launched today. The competition is open to growers in England, Wales and Scotland who are harvesting in 2010.
Colin West, MAGB Executive Director said: “Each year UK maltsters purchase nearly 2 million tonnes of malting barley to make 1.5 million tonnes of malt – in a sector worth around £600 million. We hope this competition will highlight the best on-farm practice and send a message to the wider industry on how growers can work with the supply chain to develop meaningful longer term relationships.”
The two winners from Scotland and England/Wales will receive a cash prize of £200, an invitation to the annual MAGB luncheon in November and opportunities to visit local breweries or distilleries as appropriate. The two runners up will receive a cash prize of £100.
After the closing date a panel of industry judges will draw up a shortlist. Growers on the shortlist will be visited and questioned by the judges at a pre-arranged date in July and a final decision will be made by the end of October to take into consideration marketing of the harvested crop.
